KEEPING AN EDGE... TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR SHEARS
TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR SHEARS TENSION!

REASON WHY YOUR SHOULD CHECK SHEAR TENSION BEFORE EACH WORK DAY

Loose tension will cause immediate and destructive wearing of shears.

It only takes a few seconds to check and adjust the tensions on your shears.
This should be done at the beginning of every work day to:
  • reduce the premature loss of your sharp cutting edge
  • reduce the chances of causing a serious nick or abrasion in the blade
  • reduce the chance of dropping your shears when they are loose
A Hold your shears by the thumb ring with the point at 12 o'clock .

Open the other blade by the finger ring until the point is at 9 o'clock

Let the finger ring free fall.

THERE ARE THREE SETTINGS;
THEY VARY WITH EACH TENSION SYSTEM.
  1. If your shears have a regular tension screw, the blade must stop at 11 o'clock when released.

  2. If your shears have a hand adjustable tension system that clicks when it is turned OR a rubber base under the knob, the blade should stay at the 9 o'clock position when released.

Same position as the shears in picture B.

  3. If your shears have any other type of hand adjustable tension system, the finger ring blade should stop at the 10 o'clock position

  4. Do not purchase shears if tension screw is too short. Screw must be flush with tension knob to maintain the proper setting.

CLEAN AND OIL SHEARS WITH WD-40 SPRAY LUBRICANT

Adjustments should be made as closely to these examples as possible.
  1. For regular screw systems, use the tool provided with the shears or use a screwdriver that fits snugly. Be careful not to damage the screw or shears. With the blades closed, place shears against a solid wood surface while tightening.

  2. If you have difficulty adjusting your shears' tension, clean them and try again.

  3. Some scissors with plastic or rubber bushings will lock up or constantly lose tension and even come apart if not kept in the proper setting. This is caused by stripping the soft threading and rendering the scisser useless! Even oiling will erode the bushings.

TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR SHEARS

Proper Sharpening
Improper Sharpening
Both blades are pristine
  1. Too much critical metal has been removed from shear leaving the inside blade exposed.
  2. The tips are now too pointed.
  3. The shear is now nicked and pitted along the inside edge.

Note: Adjust tension with the blades closed.

WARNING... Simple Facts You Should Know About Maintaining And Sharpening Your Shears
  • Each scissor blade is sharpened and honed to fit its specific individual function (i.e. convex single and double bevel, hollow ground, etc.) Shears must not be defaced, disfigured, or detempered.
  • Haura Ichiban (lined inside edge) must be free of pits and nicks to allow a smooth and quiet ride.
  • Every shear should be cleaned and oiled often, especially after cutting color-treated or permed hair. Use WD-40 spray lubricant to prevent oxidation of the metal from chemicals and to reduce the need for frequent sharpening, and ensure long shear life.
  • If you have had your shears sharpened in the past by another service and you were not satisfied with the quality of the job, we will reconstruct the blade at no extra charge!
If too much critical metal was removed, we will put on the appropriate edge; if your convexed edge was replaced with a bevel, we will roll the edge. These are the most common mistakes made in sharpening convex scissors.
  • Furthermore, all repairs such as balancing, refurbishing of bevel, setting and straightening of blades, and replacement of screws and plastic silencers are done free of charge (finger rest extra).

On convex scissors, one of the most common mistakes in sharpening is to make a primary and secondary bevel instead of leaving the convex edge rolled...

CARE
  • New and newly serviced scissors are easy to damage.
  • Treat them with care.
  • Never loan out your shears. Everyone cuts and pressures their scissors differently. Always keep a back up spare pair of scissors.

DO'S AND DONT'S
  • Do familiarize yourself with your new or newly serviced scissors to avoid cutting yourself with them.
  • Don't cut heavy sections.
  • Do place your scissors down and pick them up gently, as if they were raw eggs. Most people would never dream of dropping a raw egg on a counter top.
  • Don't pressure the blades.
  • Don't tap comb with scissor to remove hair.
  • Do give newly serviced scissors a few light haircuts to run the edges in.
  • Do store scissors in a sheath, case or soft wrap to avoid damage.

CLEANING AND LUBRICATION
  • Do lubricate scissors every day with WD-40 before use. They will cut well and it will prolong the pivot and sharpness.
  • Do clean and lubricate scissors at the end ot the day.

TIPS
  • When cutting with scissor over comb, cut a 1/4" from comb to avoid accidentally damaging scissor by cutting into the comb.
  • Check tension daily. If scissors are pushing hair, they need either adjustment or service.

FACT
  • A true super cobalt material is non magnetic.

As a stylist, you know the importance of care and maintenance of a client's cut and color. So it is with the most essential tool you own - your scissors. The choice of technician to whom you entrust that tool is even more crucial. Beware, however, because the majority of sharpeners callin on you are unqualified and without credentials. Often they remove too much critical metal from your shears, which compromises the edge of that all-important tool. Once the critical metal is removed, your shears are worthless.

Scissor Train Wrecks and Bad Blades. Beware of entrusting the prized tools of your craft , those which you have paid hundreds of dollars - to inferior and unqualified "scissor technicians." It's frustrating when you entrust something so important to someone and it is returned with a new problem.
